Raised in America, where we don't realize the huge blessing of freedom through choices and individuality as often as we should, we begin to look at how "I can become more successful and richer".
Who doesn't want to be wealthy, right?
There are superficial problems for the average American such as water plumbing burst or the raccoon got into the trash again, and they can be tolerated. Everyday the "normal" american doesn't have to live in life-or-death experiences 24/7 so there is plenty of time to think about building a comfortable life that suits your lifestyle.
The American Dream, i believe, is not wanting to worry about food shortages or robbery, and living comfortably in a safe, free environment where you can express yourself positively and without judgement. There, of course are the 1% who are extremely wealthy and are accustomed to the "high life" and have the ability to travel and discover, then there are those who are barely making rent and need to work 3 different jobs and support large families with 1 income. They wish their children to be successful and get the best education they can.
On both sizes of the economic spectrum, the goal is to be the best you can be. Get an education. Do something productive with your life. Make as much money as possible. That is the American Dream which is why it attracts those looking for a better life.
